Planet

US_ Berlin had been working with Planet for quite a while when I joined, and were slowly trying to convince them to let us redesign their website. Planet wasn’t up for a full overhaul, so we tackled individual pages. Some that I designed based on Planet’s exhaustive style guide include the analytics page, the basemaps page and the home page. Some of the designs have been implemented, others were and probably are moving very slow.

I tried giving the page a bit more of a “tech” look by utilizing elements like the see-through black card backgrounds, and the numbers on the slider indicators. Planet is a technology company after all and many of the markets they operate in are heavily technical. I also tried making more use of their extraordinarily beautiful satellite photography, introducing full screen image backgrounds wherever I could.

The homepage I designed lets one screen slide over the last one like you’re sorting through a stack of cards, which makes each element distinctive and allows the user to focus on one topic at a time. It also adds a flexibility to the site that the client expressed a need for. Additional sections could easily be added at any point without having to give too much thought about how they would interact with other elements of the page.
